Calm decisions that protect your test

Route familiarity helps, but safe judgement matters more than following a perfect script.

  Choose the safe place, not the first place

  When the examiner asks you to pull up on the left, quickly check both sides of the road before committing. A space may look fine until you realise you are opposite a junction, blocking a driveway, near a crossing, or making it difficult for others to pass.

  A safe-looking gap is not always a safe place to stop.

  Driving comes before the show-me question

  Do not let a vehicle-control question take your eyes and attention away from the road. If you cannot safely find the control immediately, keep driving properly and calmly tell the examiner you need a moment. Getting a question wrong can mean one driving fault; losing control while answering can become a fail. DVSA guidance

  A missed turn is better than a rushed turn

  If you miss a sat-nav instruction or take the wrong exit, do not brake sharply, cut across lanes, or force the turn. Continue safely and let the route recover. Going off route alone is not a driving fault; unsafe reactions are. DVSA examiner guidance

  Look ahead before you need to act

  Keep scanning for speed-limit signs, junctions, crossings, parked cars, buses and developing hazards. The earlier you spot them, the less likely you are to make last-second braking or steering decisions.

  Mirror, signal, then move

  Before pulling up, moving off, changing position or turning: mirrors first, then signal if needed, then act. A signal does not make a move safe; your observations do.

  Do not wait for a perfect gap

  Being cautious is good; waiting unnecessarily when it is clearly safe to go can count against you. Aim for a safe, sensible decision, not a gap so large that you hold up traffic.

  If you make a small mistake, reset

  Stalled? Took the wrong lane? Missed a turn? Breathe, make the car safe, and continue. One minor issue does not decide the test; panicking and compounding it can.
